Perhaps the most popular superhero in the Marvel Comics universe, Spiderman was a high school science student who got bit by a radioactive spider and was conferred super powers that changed his life. We know the story. At first, Peter Parker wanted to use his new found power for personal gains. But tragic events that he could have prevented if had he used his new found power led him to a dedicated crime-fighting life.
Spiderman’s powers came from the strength and ability of a spider scaled to that of a man. Hence, climbed walls and sprang from a standing jump much like spiders. His equilibrium was also enhanced to a point where Spiderman stood comfortably on poles and thin ledges.
Keeping in mind that spiders carried objects many times their weight, Peter Parker was also strong enough to pick up small cars. On several occasions, he had been able to outmuscle several big men. Some website estimated Spiderman to be able to lift 10 tons.
Shooting web strands was perhaps our favorite spider power. By shooting webs, Spiderman was able to swing around town, capture criminals, build safety nets, create useful tools such as a parachute, and many more. The incredible tensile and adhesive strength of Spiderman’s web strands were strong enough to hold a runaway train as we saw in the movie, Spider-Man 2. Luckily, the web strands dissolved over time so that the city was not polluted with webbing.
In the comic books, Peter Parker invented the webshooter and the web fluid. He was after all a brilliant science student. In the movies, shooting web was an inherited effect from the radioactive spider that bit him.
Finally, what completed Spiderman and ultimately allowed him to compete with and defeat supervillains like the Green Goblin, Electro, and Doctor Octopus was his “spider sense.” This special power had been able to alert Spiderman from attacks that couldn’t be picked up using the five senses (seeing, smelling, hearing, touching, and tasting). In a way, it was a precognition so that Spider-Man was able to jump away before a bomb explodes without knowing when the timer was set. Or avoiding an attack from behind without him knowing that an attack was coming.
